1. Walk Through Plaza Independencia
The heart of the city is Plaza Independencia, a large central square surrounded by restaurants, hotels, and cultural institutions. On weekends, artisan markets fill the plaza and live music is common. The underground Museo Municipal de Arte Moderno sits beneath the square itself. Four smaller plazas radiate outward — Plaza España, Plaza Italia, Plaza Chile, and Plaza San Martín — each with its own character.
2. Visit Parque General San Martín
Designed by landscape architect Charles Thays, this 300-hectare urban park on the western edge of the city features a lake, rose garden, amphitheater, and stunning views toward the Andes. Perfect for a morning run, a picnic, or simply walking and watching Mendocino daily life.
3. Explore Chacras de Coria
About 15 minutes from the city center, this charming residential neighborhood has excellent boutique restaurants, wine bars, and artisan shops — one of the best places in Mendoza for lunch or dinner away from the tourist circuit.
4. Try the Food Scene
Beyond asado and empanadas, look for restaurants focusing on Andean ingredients and Cuyo cuisine. The city has developed a serious café culture with excellent specialty coffee, craft beer, and artisanal food producers throughout.
5. Visit the Area Fundacional
The original Mendoza, destroyed in the 1861 earthquake, left archaeological remains now part of the Area Fundacional. The Museo del Área Fundacional showcases artifacts from the pre-earthquake era and provides fascinating context for the city’s dramatic history.
